New record for wheat yield has been taken out

Eric Watson from Ashburton has taken out the World Record for the highest wheat yield - for the second consecutive time. Watson produced 173.98 quintals per hectare wheat crop,  his previous record was 167.91 quintals per hectare.

For achieving high yield, he emphasized the importance of liquid nitrogen.

According to Andrey Sizov, the head of Sovekon news agency, this achievement is three times higher than EU, five times higher than the U.S and six times higher than Russia.

For the sake of comparison, on average, irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand produce about 120 quintals per hectare which is much lower than Mr. Watson’s achievement.

“By trying new cultivars and switching to liquid nitrogen we were able to achieve another incredible result.” he said. Planted in April 2019 and harvested on 17 February 2020, the wheat variety which is called  Kerrin was planted on that area.
